William Mahlmann Obituary

Dorset, VT - William J. Mahlmann, 94, of Dorset, Vermont, passed away peacefully, after a short illness, on Monday, August 18, 2025, at the Center for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, Vermont.

Born on May 27, 1931, in Staten Island, New York, Bill was the son of the late Henry and Mary (Johnston) Mahlmann. He was raised in Staten Island, where he attended Our Lady of Good Counsel School and later graduated from St. Peter’s High School. He went on to attend Providence College in Rhode Island before being drafted into the United States Army, proudly serving his country during the Korean Conflict.

Following his military service, Bill began a long and dedicated career in banking. He worked at Chase Manhattan Bank—now JP Morgan Chase—in New York City and later in Staten Island for over two decades. In 1973, he moved to Dorset, Vermont, where he continued his career at Merchant’s Bank in Manchester. He retired after 22 years of service, remembered by colleagues and customers alike for his professionalism and kindness.

Bill was a devoted member of the Dorset community. He served on the town’s Select Board for more than 20 years, many of those as Chairman. His commitment to public service and the well-being of his neighbors left a lasting mark on the town he loved.

He was also known for his deep affection for animals, particularly his dogs, whom he treated as members of his family. His love and care for them was one of his most enduring qualities.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Charlene Morin Mahlmann, whom he married on April 15, 1992, his brother and sister-in-law, Francis and Carol Morin, of Bennington, Vt, longtime friends Michael & Nancy Oltedal of Dorset, Vt., and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He is also remembered fondly by his best friend, Vinnie Cimmino of Staten Island, NY, and was predeceased by Vinnie’s wife, Dorothy. In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his brother, Harry Mahlmann.

Please respect William’s wish for a private service.

In memory of Bill, the family suggests that donations be made to Second Chance Animal Shelter, 1779 VT RTE 7A, Arlington, VT, 05250.
