Jacksonville, FL – Ruth Flint Frew, age 73, died peacefully on June 26, 2025, at her home in Jacksonville, with her sister Nancy by her side. A lifelong Christian, Ruth was known for her kindness, devotion, and generosity to family and countless friends, who will miss her dearly.
Ruth was born on November 4, 1951, in Cambridge, NY, the daughter of Gilbert Hall Flint and Florence Winfield Flint, who were teachers at Salem Washington Academy. When Ruth was two, she moved with her family from the village of Salem to a farmstead on Crosier Road, in Hebron. As the family grew, Ruth became the big sister to her younger siblings –George, Carl, Jim, and Nancy – a role that she cherished for life.
Ruth excelled academically, graduating from Salem Washington Academy as valedictorian of the Class of 1969. She went on to her mother’s alma mater, Plattsburgh State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education. From 1972 to 1974, Ruth worked for Mount Wachusett Community College, in Massachusetts. She taught College Algebra classes for active-duty soldiers at Fort Devens.
During the mid-1970s, Ruth transitioned from teaching to the actuarial profession, first in Massachusetts and then in Florida. In 1977, Ruth became owner of Southeastern Pension Services, Inc. She gained the deep respect of clients and staff during her 21 years of running a successful business.
A pioneer in the actuarial profession, Ruth was the second woman credentialed as a Fellow in the American Society of Pension Actuaries (ASPA). She served on the ASPA board of directors and executive committee in several roles, including treasurer, and vice president in charge of the Education and Examination Committee.
Ruth ultimately was elected as the first woman to serve as ASPA’s National President, a position she held from 1980 to 1993. She served two terms on the board of directors of the American Academy of Actuaries and two terms on the Actuarial Board for Counseling & Discipline.
After selling her company in 1998, Ruth retired and embarked on many new adventures. She took pleasure in spending time with her parents during their later years, including taking them on special trips. Though Ruth traveled extensively within the U.S., she often returned home to New York during the summer to be with family and friends.
Ruth used her administrative skills to help advance the causes she believed in. She served on the board of directors and executive committee of the Jacksonville Women’s Network, culminating in a double term as president, from 1984 to 1994. She also served on the board of the non-profit Women’s Center of Jacksonville for several years.
Ruth was introduced to Southern Gospel Music during the early 2000s. She quickly became an active volunteer, helping with concerts and conventions. She was voted as Fan of the Decade (2010-2020) and served as National Volunteer Coordinator for the National Quartet Convention (2014-2024). At her last National Quartet Convention, in September, she was honored with a plaque for her boundless service.
Ruth is survived by her brother George Flint and his wife Darlene, of Hebron, NY; her brother Carl Flint, of Cambridge, NY; her brother Jim Flint and his wife Barb, of West Rutland, VT; and her sister Nancy Flint-Budde, of Austin, TX. Ruth was predeceased by her parents, Gilbert and Florence Flint, and her half-brother, Keith Flint. Ruth leaves behind beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
