Patrick Brereton, Jr. Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Patrick R. Brereton, Jr., a resident of Saratoga Springs, NY, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 13th at his home with his wife, Marina, by his side.  He was 81 years old. Born in Syracuse, NY, on July 5, 1943, Pat, nicknamed “Birch” as a kid by his older sister Nancy, lived a life full of love, purpose, and commitment to his family, friends, and community. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his legacy will continue to inspire and guide those who remain.

Pat graduated from Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse before pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Syracuse University. After completing his education, Pat entered the world of self-employment, where he thrived for 25 years in the college market and later expanded to hospitals, specializing in commercial furniture sales. His professional career was marked by dedication and integrity, and he became well-respected for his work ethic and his ability to build strong relationships with clients and colleagues alike.

Outside of his professional life, Pat was deeply committed to his faith and to service. A member of the New Skete Monastery in Cambridge, NY, he gave his time generously to the monastery, where he helped socialize the German Shepherds that the monastery is known for breeding. Patrick’s connection to New Skete was not only spiritual but also personal, as he found great joy in both the peace and the purpose that came from helping with the dogs.

An avid lover of the outdoors and an athletic man, Pat enjoyed spending time walking the beautiful trails of Skidmore College, where he could often be found enjoying the serenity of nature with his dogs. Whether on foot or in conversation, Patrick’s spirit of curiosity and joy was contagious, and he will be remembered for his warm heart and his love for life.

Patrick is survived by his loving wife, Marina Paul Brereton, whom he married on October 20, 2012. He is also survived by his children, Colleen Brereton Greene (Chris) of North Salem, NY, Erin Brereton of Naples, FL, and Katie Brereton of Asheville, NC, as well as his stepson Lindon Paul (Jessica) and cherished grandchildren, Robert Rickard, Sarah Rickard, and Carson and Roman Paul.

He was predeceased by his parents and his beloved older sister, Nancy McMenaman, and her children of whom Pat was a constant in their lives.  He is also survived by his Goddaughter, Erin Duffy of Manlius NY, who he cherished spending time with throughout his life.

Pat’s favorite place was Grenada where he and Marina spent part of their winters.  He loved the sunshine, warm weather and kind people of the beautiful island. Being there with Marina was the highlight of his life.

Patrick’s memory will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. His life was a testament to love, faith, and the importance of family, and he will be missed beyond measure.

A visitation period will be from 10:30-11:00 am Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at the New Skete Monastery, 273 New Skete Lane, Cambridge and a service will follow at 11:00 am.  Burial will be in the New Skete Cemetery following the service and the Repast will be in the New Skete Monastery refectory.
