Marie (Carter) Smith

Rockledge, FL - Marie Smith, formerly of Gansevoort and Cossayuna, passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord on November 18, 2023 surrounded by loved ones at her home in Rockledge, Florida. Marie was predeceased by her husband, Walter C. Smith and her daughter, Karen Jansson.

She is survived by their remaining children: Diane (Blaine) Dosenberry of Lake, Michigan; Carol (Doug) Rives of Rockledge, Florida; Patricia (Nathan) Knowles, of Cocoa, Florida and David Smith of Stafford, Virginia. Her beloved grandchildren: Danielle (Joe) Starkey, Chris (Stacia) Fontaine, Michael (Missy) Jenison, Bethany (Damon) Rives, Chelsea (Richard) Smindak, Amber (Jason) Simpson, Mitchell Smith, Elias Mansmith, Jessica (Tom) Hansen, Nathaniel (Kelly) Knowles and Amanda (William) Adrian. Marie was proud to have many great and great-great grandchildren who gave her great joy.

Marie and Walter raised their five children in Gansevoort where she was a founding member of the St. Theresa Altar Rosary Society. She retired from Price Chopper after many years as a favorite cashier. In their later years moving to Cossayuna Lake, Marie was an active member of the CLIA as well as the Argyle Senior Citizens where she was honored as a Senior of the Year. She enjoyed reading, baking, sewing, crafting, fishing, cycling, kayaking, cross country skiing and her beloved flower gardens.

Her grandchildren have fond memories of homemade treats and handmade dolls and crafts. Marie and Walter moved to Rockledge, Florida in 2015 to live with their daughter, Carol and her family. While she always considered New York her home, she enjoyed the many visits from family to sunny Florida and was happy to be with family that could take care of her in her later years.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, November 29, 2023 from 4-6 pm at the McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home, 19 East Broadway, Salem.

Funeral services will be Thursday, November 30, 2023 at 10:00 am at Holy Cross Church, 249 North Main St., Salem.  Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Schuylerville.  A reception will be at the American Legion, 6 Clancy St., Schuylerville following the services.
