Louise R. "Dodie" (Rose) Daly

Rupert, VT-Louise R. “Dodie” Daly, 82, of Rupert, VT passed away peacefully on Friday, March 31, 2023 at the home of her daughter in Wallingford, VT with her family at her side.

Louise was born September 6, 1940 in Yonkers, NY, the daughter of the late Harold and Louise (Schade) Rose. She graduated from Gorton High School in Yonkers, NY and was a student at the University of Vermont and Hunter College, studying botany.  

Louise worked for Transit Mix in New York City until she married her husband of over 52 years, William M. Daly, in February of 1962 in Yonkers. They moved to Waterbury, CT where she worked as a floral designer and then long-time bookkeeper for Graham’s Florist. When they moved to Danbury, CT she worked as a floral designer for White Conservatory florist. It was Danbury where Louise and her husband settled and raised their eight children. She was a vibrant and magnetic force in the community, actively participating and spearheading numerous activities, fundraisers, church programs, scouting adventures, and so many other things that came along with having such a large family. She initiated fundraisers to help raise money for Sacred Heart School in Danbury where all her children attended. She led the charge for her daughters’ Girl Scout troops to raise funds for their summer trips by making Christmas wreaths in her backyard each year. Her door was always open, there was always something to eat, and a hot cup of tea on the way for anyone who stopped by. 

Louise and her husband retired to Rupert 20 years ago, the town where she spent her summers since she was two years old. Despite being retired, she never sat still. She spent as much time as she could “playing in the dirt” in her sprawling gardens, as evidenced by the thousands of daffodils she planted at her home to welcome spring to the town. She was active in her church, helping manage the finances and organizing fundraisers, suppers and breakfasts. She was a leader in her local PFLAG chapter. She helped establish the Rupert Food Pantry, to make sure everyone in town had something to eat. 

Louise was predeceased by her husband, and is survived by her children, Marianne B. (Pam) Daly of Woodbury, CT, Katherine L. "Katie" (Edwin) Lockwood of Danbury, CT, Jennifer A. Daly of Wallingford, VT, Elizabeth D. (Edward) Novak of Manchester Center, VT, Carol D. (Aaron) Bowman of Danbury, CT, William M. (Loren) Daly, II of Danbury, CT, Timothy M. (William) Daly of Wilton, CT and Joshua P. Daly of Burien, WA. She is also survived by a sister, Marianne Horsman of Georgia, sister-in-law Carol J. Daly of Brookfield, CT, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Bernice & William Willson of Thousand Oaks, CA, as well as 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews & cousins, and those she was “YOM” to.

Relatives and friends may call on Friday, April 7, 2023 from 4-6 pm at the McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home, 19 East Broadway, Salem, NY. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, June 3, 2023 at the Congregational Church of Rupert, 2803 VT Route 153, Rupert, VT, with interment immediately following. 

The family would like to thank the medical staff at Rutland Regional Medical Center, and the staff and nurses from VNA & Hospice of the Southwest Region of Vermont for the incredible care and support given to mom.
