Green Island-Leo A. Gariepy, 87, of Green Island and previously a longtime Cohoes resident, passed away Friday, April 28, 2023.
Leo was born in Cohoes July 12, 1935 the son of the late Emile and Malvina (Lemire) Gariepy. He attended St. Joseph’s School and Cohoes High School. Leo worked at Norton Co. in Watervliet as a machine operator and later worked for Wells Fargo Armored Car Corporation in Albany as an armored car operator and also assistant office manager. He also owned and operated Gariepy’s Courier and Delivery Service for 10 years and retired from the Capital District Psychiatric Center in Albany as a Supervisor in the housekeeping dept. retiring in 1997. Following retirement, he worked for Stanton-Farrell Funeral Home in Cohoes and also with his son at the McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home in Salem and Ackley, Ross & Gariepy Funeral Home in Cambridge for several years. Leo also would help other funeral homes in the area when they needed assistance.
Leo was a devout catholic and a communicant of the former St. Joseph’s Church in Cohoes and currently a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Waterford. For many years, he played golf and volunteered at the Eddy Village Green in Cohoes particularly the Men’s Group. He was dedicated to his wife and family and loved his longtime canine companion, Gretel.
In addition to his parents, Leo was predeceased by his grandson, Jeffrey M. Gariepy, Jr. who passed away February 19, 2023; a great grandson, Colton Michael Mitchell who passed away September 4, 2015; brothers, Rene Gariepy in 1996 and Gerard Gariepy in 2017 and his beloved canine companion, Gretel.
Leo is survived by his wife of 68 years, Beverly Ann Gradoni Gariepy who he married April 10, 1955; his children, Daniel L. (Suzanne) of Melrose, Jeffrey M. (Bonnie) of Schaghticoke, Brian J. of Green Island, David S. (Sharon) of Cohoes, Linda T. (Fred) Hunt of Green Island and James M. (Mary) of Salem.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jason, Jeremy, Jessica, Carissa, Matthew, Andrew, Amber, Cody, Michael and 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are Thursday, May 4, 2023 from 4-7 pm at the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 105 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes.
Funeral Friday, May 5, 2023 from the Fitzgerald Funeral Home at 12:15 PM and at 1:00 PM at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 119 Broad St., Waterford where a mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Rev. Liam O’Doherty. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Waterford.
