Salem - John B. Neil, 96, of Salem, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at the Warren Center in Queensbury.
Born on June 22, 1929, in West Hebron, he was the son of the late John C. and Thelma (Palmer) Neil. A lifelong resident of Washington County, John graduated from Salem Washington Academy in 1947 and went on to build a life defined by hard work, service, and devotion to community and family.
John was a well-known and respected businessman in the Salem and Granville areas. For many years, he co-owned Salem Hardware and Supply in Salem as well as American Hardware in Granville before his retirement. His work ethic and commitment to customer service made both establishments’ fixtures in their respective towns.
A man of deep faith and civic spirit, John was a longtime member of Holy Cross Church in Salem, where he served as a Trustee for 20 years. He was also active in the Knights of Columbus, serving as past Treasurer, and dedicated his time and talents to the Salem Mutual Fire Insurance Company, including serving as President and a longtime delegate.
John was one of the founding members of the Salem Rescue Squad, a role that reflected his lifelong dedication to helping others. He was also a volunteer with the excursion railroad that operated between Salem and Shushan—a pastime that brought him much joy.
In retirement, John and his beloved wife Mary enjoyed traveling and camping in their motor home. Together, they were active members of the Adirondack Travelers of Glens Falls and the Marble Valley Gallivanters of Rutland, Vermont. These adventures brought them lasting friendships and fond memories throughout the region and beyond.
Above all, John was a devoted family man. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 72 years, Mary (Baker) Neil, who passed away in 2021, as well as by his son, Michael Neil, and his brothers and sister, Paul Neil, Leon Neil and Carol Langlois.
He is survived by his children: Linda (Andy) Caruso of Lake George; Jeanne (Alan) Klein of Mesa, AZ; Jonathan (Sue) Neil of Shushan; and Debi (the late Edward) Woroby of Salem. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. His presence will be deeply missed and warmly remembered by all who knew him.
A private service will be held for the family.
Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Salem.
