Cambridge - John J. Demarest, Jr., 83, of Cambridge, NY, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at the Washington Center in Argyle, NY. Born on August 8, 1941, in Troy, NY, he was the son of Marion and John Demarest, Sr.
John J. Demarest, Jr. was a man of dedication and warmth, whose life was marked by significant achievements and cherished relationships. He attended Christian Brother’s Academy in Albany, NY, before earning his Bachelor’s Degree from St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY. On December 26, 1964, John married Alice Rothmann Demarest, beginning a partnership that would span nearly six decades. Together, they raised three children, Jessica (Jim) Caines of Lebanon, CT, and Mike Demarest of Baltimore, MD, and welcomed a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Demarest of Oswego, NY.
John’s career was distinguished by his tenure at several prominent organizations, including Mohasco in Amsterdam, NY, Troy Bilt in Lansingburgh, NY, and Cluett & Peabody in Troy, NY. He concluded his professional journey at Key Bank in Albany, NY, where he retired as the Vice President of Data Processing. His work was a testament to his commitment and expertise, qualities he carried into all aspects of his life.
A man of diverse interests, John found joy in golfing, fishing, and storytelling. He had a passion for the stock market and treasured his time spent at Hedge’s Lake in Cambridge, NY. His ability to bring humor and insight into conversations made him a beloved presence among family and friends.
John is survived by his devoted wife, Alice; his children, Jessica and Mike; his daughter-in-law, Cynthia; and his cherished grandchildren, Justus Demarest, Connor Caines, and Evan Caines. He was predeceased by his parents and his eldest son, John J. Demarest, III.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Ackley, Ross & Gariepy Funeral Home, located at 73 West Main Street in Cambridge, NY. The family will have a time of remembrance beginning at 6:30pm prior to the conclusion of the calling hours.
