Salem - Herbert E. Norton, 58, of Salem, passed away peacefully at his residence on Tuesday morning, July 15, 2025, after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Cambridge, NY, Herb was the son of the late Herbert Norton and Nellie Keys Norton Getty. He was raised in Salem and graduated in 1986 from Salem Washington Academy, where he was a proud member of the basketball, football, and track teams.
Throughout his life, Herb was known for his strong work ethic and skill in roofing. He was employed by several roofing companies, including Skyway Roofing in Albany and Monahan and Loughlin in Hudson Falls, as well as firms outside the area. He brought a steady hand and dependable presence to every job he took on.
Herb enjoyed the outdoors and spent much of his free time fishing, gardening, golfing, and camping. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the New York Yankees and the San Diego Chargers. Herb had many hobbies but one of his favorite was to build things such as sheds, bunny houses, and decks. He also had a passion to teach kids how to play sports and was excited to have the opportunity to coach basketball and football teams.
He is survived by his two sons, Colin Norton of Westland, MI, and Justin Norton of South Glens Falls, and is the grandfather of Eligha and Ashten Norton. He is also survived by his companion, Suzanne Allen Done, and her five children and many grandchildren.
He leaves behind his siblings: Jeff Norton, Rosemary Getty Haines, Kathleen Getty Dostie, Suzanne Getty Stevens, Paul Getty, and James Getty. Herb is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins, especially Lenny Keys, Jim Bain, and Mark Woodell, who held a special place in his life.
In addition to his parents, Herb was predeceased by his stepfather, Alfred “Pug” Getty, and a brother, George Getty.
A special thank you to the nurses, family, and friends who helped care for Herb during this time. Your kindness and compassion will not be soon forgotten.
A celebration of Herb’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Salem Tavern, 219 Main Street, Salem. Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, enjoy lunch, and honor the life of a man whose kindness, generosity, and sense of humor will be deeply missed.
