Cambridge - Helen L. Smith, age 96, a lifelong resident of Cambridge, New York, passed away peacefully on Christmas Eve, Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Vermont. She was born on November 26, 1928, in Cambridge, NY, to the late James and Mary (Cunningham) Linendoll.
Helen graduated from Cambridge Union High School in 1947. She began working at the Cambridge Valley Bank until her marriage to George S. Smith on May 2, 1959 and together they raised their family in Ash Grove. Helen returned to work and is best remembered as the Nurse’s Aid at Cambridge Central School, a role she enjoyed for 20 years. Helen was also an active member of St. Patrick’s Church in Cambridge for her entire life.
Throughout her life, Helen was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend. She found joy in simple pleasures: reading, spending time with her beloved family, and sharing special moments with her children and grandchildren. Helen’s warmth and love for her family were evident in everything she did, and her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Helen is survived by her children, Donald and Connie (Polacek) Smith of Ravenel, SC, Mary Jane Young of Cambridge, NY, George P. Smith of Richmond Hill, GA, Kathleen Smith, son-in-law, Bob Endee, both of Cambridge, NY and a step-son, Chris Smith and his wife Donna of White Creek, their two boys, Scott and Sean Smith as well as their families.
Helen was blessed with grandchildren, Hailey Baty, Rebecca Howe and her husband Jared, Ethan Young, Tyler Endee, Patrick Smith, and Kristen Smith.
Helen is predeceased by her husband of 58 years, George S. Smith in 2017 and a son-in-law, Joseph Young in 2021.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 12:00 pm Saturday, January 18, 2025 at St. Patrick’s Church, 17 South Park St., Cambridge with Rev. Peter Tkocz officiating. Visiting hours will be from 10 am to 12 pm prior to the funeral mass.
