Salem - Harold Thomas Petty, 87, of Salem, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2026 at Saratoga Hospital.
Born October 25, 1938 in Granville, he was the son of the late Curtis Joseph and Helen Carolyn (Hatch) Petty. Known to many as “Tom,” he attended Granville and Greenwich schools.
Tom was a hardworking man throughout his life. He was employed for many years at Decora in Fort Edward, later worked at Capital Tractor in Greenwich, and eventually retired in 2001 from the Town of Greenwich Highway Department, where he served as a truck driver for many years.
He was a former member and past chief of the Cossayuna Volunteer Fire Department, a role he took great pride in. In his free time, Tom enjoyed collecting John Deere tractors, snowmobiling, and riding motorcycles.
On November 23, 1957, he married Laura Sebast, who survives him.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Ronald Petty (Brenda Lewis) of Fort Ann, Donna Esmond (Jim) of Salem, and Christine Watts (Sam) of Salem; his daughter-in-law, Rose Petty of Salem; his siblings, Carol Yanke-Nason of Cambridge, Wayne Petty (Carolyn) of East Greenwich, and Nancy Cary of Salem; seven grandchildren, Matt, Heather, Heidi, Brandie, Cheyenne, Tanner, and Trevor; eight great-grandchildren, Avalia, Hayden, Hadley, Bradley, Elliona, Brynleigh, Autumn, and Grant; as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Lester Petty, Wallace Petty, Earl Petty, Janice Robertson, Neil Petty, and Philip Petty.
Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 at the McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home, 19 East Broadway, Salem. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m., with Rev. Debbie Earthrowl officiating.
Interment will take place in Mettowee Valley Cemetery in Granville.
