Salem - Gerald Hugh Cutler, 83, of Salem, passed away peacefully at his residence on Wednesday morning, October 15, 2025.
Born on January 8, 1942, in Whitinsville, Massachusetts, Gerald was the son of the late Herbert and Rita (King) Cutler. He graduated from Northbridge High School and went on to earn his degree from Northeastern University in 1965. He later received his Master’s Degree from SUNY Albany.
Throughout his career, Gerald was devoted to public service in the field of mental health. He worked for the Department of Mental Health in Massachusetts, then served with the State of Illinois, and later the New York State Department of Mental Health in Valatie, NY. He completed his career at the Wilton Developmental Center in Wilton, NY, retiring in the 1990s.
Gerald was a man of deep faith and community commitment. A member of the Coila Church, he was actively involved in ministry and outreach, particularly through Samaritan’s Purse. For over ten years, he volunteered with Disaster Relief efforts, traveling to all but two U.S. states and to other countries to serve those in need.
Gerald had a lifelong love of sports and enjoyed reading, but his greatest joy came from time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Priscilla Mann Cutler, whom he married on May 11, 1963; his children, James Michael Cutler (Carol Smith Cutler) of Granville, NY, Leslie Jean Cutler Richards (John Glenn Richards) of Schuylerville, NY and Suzanne Marie Hermann (Todd Hermann) of Berlin, NY.
Gerald also leaves behind his sisters, Clare Lemovitz (the late Harvey) of Norton, MA, and Luann Gardner (David Gardner) of Rehoboth, MA; his cherished grandchildren: Nathan Richards, Jeffrey Richards, Seamus Cutler, Greta Hermann, Holly Hermann, and Bridget Hermann; and his great-grandchildren: Graham Richards, Jasmine Richards, Heath Richards, Gerald Richards, Alicestyn Richards, Eoin Cutler, and Faolin Cutler as well as two nieces and three nephews.
In addition to his parents, Gerald was predeceased by his grandson, Benjamin Hermann, and his brother, Donald John Cutler.
A Celebration of Gerald’s life will be at 2:00 pm Saturday, October 25, 2025 at the Coila Church, 93 State Route 372, Cambridge, NY.
