Eleanor Jean (Marshalsea) Lourie

Salem, NY - Eleanor Jean Lourie, daughter of Walter & Helen Marshalsea, was born on November 6, 1933 at Mary McClellan Hospital in Cambridge, New York.  Eleanor passed away Sunday, January 4, 2026.

She attended Salem Central School and graduated in 1952. On September 20th that same year she married Robert C. Lourie of West Rupert, Vermont. They had nine children over the next 18 years.

Eleanor’s love for her husband Robert and family was her absolute joy. They lived a full life on several farms before landing at her family farm in Salem, where they raised their children on what would be called Bob-El Farm.

Eleanor was active in several local organizations, including 4-H (where she served as a leader), the Farm Bureau-Vermont Extension, and the Homemakers group at Coila Church where she was also a deacon for many years.

She worked while raising her children and continued working well into her 80’s, which included working in hospitality and retail.

Her many loves and talents included sewing, gardening (especially at her beloved camp), and spending time with family and friends. She loved to travel, visiting her children and grandchildren, which also took them to Alaska for two years.

She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Robert, and her 9 children: Robert (Nancy), Susan Ross (Thomas), Barbara Harrington (Ed), JoAnne Dougherty (Ken), Douglas (Cathy), Christopher (Bernie), Jill Quin (Jac), Julia Bryant (Scott), Walter (Linda), along with 28 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

May her soul dwell with the blessed and may her memory be eternal.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at the Coila Church, 93 State Route 372, Cambridge, NY. A calling hour will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Rupert Cemetery.
