Shushan, New York—Edward David Krepfle, 61, of Shushan died Thursday, July 13, 2023 at his home.
Born October 29, 1961 in Dubuque, Iowa, he was the son of the late Edward “Bill” Krepfle and Wilma “Tuddy” Dahl Stierman.
David grew up exploring the cliffs of the Mississippi River in Dubuque, Iowa. His love of art, nature, gardening, Tonka trucks and working with wood is a reflection of his childhood and adulthood. He was a champion cycling competitor and hotdog skier. David never met a person that wasn’t instantly his friend.
David graduated from Loras College in 1988. He then moved to New York, New York to establish his career in art. Recognition resulting in the Pollack-Krasner award provided an important foundation. He earned a Masters in Fine Art at The State University of New York at Albany, becoming a master caster of metals. He was a founding member artist of the Dumbo Art Center, eventually bringing more than a million people to their annual festival. He also ran a successful contracting business during this period. For six years, he worked and prepared shows from a studio in Berlin, Germany, making his characteristic masks and head sculptures in the genre of social criticism. Among his passions were mushroom gathering, cooking and winemaking; for which ingredients he foraged berries and blossoms as they matured throughout the season. He was a highly successful fisherman who knew how to smoke delicious trout from the Battenkill.
He is survived by his stepdad Richard (Jeanne) Stierman of Dubuque, Iowa; his partner of 21 years Jean Campbell of Shushan; sisters Shelley (Dave) Petesch of Savannah, Georgia; Angela (William) McCaffery of North Liberty, Iowa; Kathy Stierman of Dubuque, Iowa and his brother Daniel (Jodi) Krepfle of Hilton Head, South Carolina. David had 4 nephews, 3 nieces, 3 great nephews and 1 great niece.
