Donna R. (Doane) Hannibal

Shushan, NY – Donna R. Hannibal, 76, of Shushan, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 16, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on July 20, 1949, in Bennington, VT, she was the daughter of the late John and Helen (Gilchrest) Doane.

Donna was a graduate of Salem Washington Academy and later attended Mildred Elley Secretarial School in Troy. She went on to work at the Salem Post Office, where she served as a postal clerk for 17 years, retiring after many years of dedicated service and friendships.

A devoted member of the Shushan United Methodist Church, Donna served as Treasurer for many years, a role she proudly carried on after her mother. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Francis J. Clark American Legion. Donna enjoyed getting away to the casino, especially trips to the Peppermill Casino in Reno, Nevada, and closer to home at the Saratoga Casino.

Donna found her greatest happiness in the simple things. She enjoyed camping, sewing, and took special pride in making clothing for her granddaughters when they were young. She loved tending to her flower gardens and was well known for her baking—her pies and cream puffs were especially enjoyed by all who knew her.

On October 22, 1967, she married Melford Hannibal, and together they shared 58 years of marriage, family, and memories.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Scott (Kathy) Hannibal of Bennington, VT, Elaine (Randy) Baker of Wallingford, VT, and Matthew Hannibal of Shushan, NY; her sister, Elaine McKeighan of Shushan, NY; her grandchildren, Harley Hannibal, Nicholas (Mandy) Baker, and Haley Baker; and her great-grandchildren, Vada and Weston Baker.

In addition to her parents, Donna was predeceased by her brother-in-law, James McKeighan; and her mother and father-in-law, Ann Smith Hannibal and Charles Hannibal.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at the Church of Christ, located at the corner of Route 153 and East Street in West Rupert, VT.  A reception will be at the Shushan Firehouse following the service.
