Donald Riche Obituary

Salem - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald E. Riche, of 133 Black Creek Road, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at the age of 89.

Don is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Karen E. (Stanton) Riche, who he married July 3, 1965; his children Stacy (Matt) Parker, Amy (Scott) Patrick, and D. Todd (Stacy) Riche; and his nephew Shane (Leslie) Armstrong.

He was a proud grandfather to Heather (Mike) Steiert, Dan (Kylin) Randall, Clayton Patrick, Cassie Patrick, Kyndra Riche, Blake Riche, Carson Patrick, Michael Riche, and Tanner Riche; and great-grandfather to Lydia Steiert, Declan Randall, Millie Steiert, and Lennon Randall. He is also remembered fondly by his great-niece and nephews, Delaney, Kathan, and Sawyer Armstrong.

Don was predeceased by his parents, Lydia and Edmund Riche, his sister-in-law Sue Armstrong, and his niece Keri Armstrong.

A graduate of Salem Washington Academy, Don proudly served in the U.S. Army from May 1955 to May 1957 in Sacramento, California. Following his military service, he joined the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 106, where he had a distinguished 65-year career in road construction. Don was especially proud of his five years working on the construction of the Empire State Plaza. He retired from IUOE Local 106 on February 1, 1995.

Don lived a life filled with deep love and unwavering pride in his family. He enjoyed attending his beloved grandchildren’s events and cherished every moment spent with them. Spending time with his granddogs became a daily ritual and one that brought him great joy.  Don's friendships were built on laughter, loyalty, and countless shared adventures—many of which became treasured stories.

With a natural gift for conversation and connection, Don left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His vibrant presence and unmistakable spirit will live on in the memories and smiles of those who knew and loved him. Don was truly one of a kind—outgoing, full of personality, and will be deeply missed by all.

A private family service will be held at the McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home, Inc. in Salem, NY.
