Salem - Deborah Lee Hall, 71, a beloved resident of Salem, New York, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY. Born on January 16, 1953, in Cambridge, NY, Deborah was the daughter of Mary McCann Hall and Ralph Hall.
Raised in Salem, Deborah was a dedicated scholar and a lifelong learner. She graduated from Salem Washington Academy in 1971 and pursued higher education with great determination. She earned her bachelor’s degree from St. Lawrence University and went on to complete her Master’s degree at the College of St. Rose. Deborah’s commitment to education led her to a rewarding career as a high school teacher at St. Mary’s High School in Hoosick Falls, NY. Following the school’s closure, she transitioned to a successful 25-year career with Verizon in Albany, NY.
Beyond her professional achievements, Deborah was a woman of diverse passions. She found joy in solving puzzles, tending to her flowers, and crocheting. Her love for animals was evident in the care she extended to her pets and her interest in animal welfare. Deborah was an avid fan of “Jeopardy” and cherished her time spent with her nieces and nephews, who were a source of immense pride and happiness for her.
Deborah is survived by her siblings, Denise Gillis and Diane (Bo) Arnold, and her nieces and nephews: Jessica Gillis (Ed) Bullock, Evan Black, Cameron (Kim) Arnold, Jeremy (Jennifer) Gillis, Brittany (Matt) Sargent, and Audra (Shane Mitchell) Arnold. She also leaves behind her great-nieces and great-nephews: Justin and Aubrey Sargent, Lucas Martindale, Avery and Colton Gillis, Isla Arnold, and Garrett Bullock. She was predeceased by her parents and her nephews, Justin Gillis and Gregory Gillis.
A graveside service will be held for family and close friends at Evergreen Cemetery in Salem, NY.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Margaret Keyes, her in home caregiver; Janine French of the Washington Center and the dedicated staff of the Washington Center Daycare for their compassionate care. Special thanks are also due to her friends Sharon White, Joy Gerhart, and Yvonne Ambrose for their supportive phone calls to Deborah.

Deborah’s warm spirit, dedication to her work, and love for her family will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her memory will be cherished by her family and friends, and her legacy of kindness and passion will endure in their hearts.
