Salem-If you knew him, you loved him. And he loved you too. You either called him Newt, Newtybaud, Newton, Newtipie, Newtist, Superdood, Uncle Jungle Gym, Old Timer, or any other name he went by. He was born Christopher Garrett Newton on October 13, 1987.
Newt grew up in Salem, New York. He went to Salem Washington Academy where he attempted to get straight A’s one way or another. He then attended SUNY Potsdam where he joined the brotherhood of Delta Kappa Theta in Spring 2009. The bond he built with his brothers stayed strong well beyond Potsdam.
His passions were widespread across many facets of his life whether being music, nature, philosophy, rooting on the 49ers, or creating with his hands. He wrote, beat those strings, and loved to sing. You could find him kayaking down the Battenkill, hiking a mountain, or camping in the woods. He had a profound love for Salem Art Works where he could put his imagination and creativity to work. He loved sharing these experiences with all of the people in his life. Newt captivated audiences with his incredible storytelling and hilarious tales. Newt had a way
of making every encounter memorable and full of laughter. The only thing bigger than his smile, is his heart. He cared deeply for his family and his friends, and they for him. Perhaps the deepest connection he shared was that with his mom, aka Ma Dukes, Blue Hair, Mama Newts, Crazy Carol Newton. We believe that the two are together again.
Though Newt left us in body, his spirit lives on through nature and song. We love him and he loves us and we’ll always remember.
