Carol Walrath Obituary

Salem - Carol Ann Walrath, 85, of Salem, passed away peacefully after a long illness on Friday, March 1, 2024, with her loving family at her side.  Born on March 6, 1938 in Teaneck, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Clara (Arfsten) Kruppenbacher.  Carol moved from New Jersey to the town of Lykers and graduated from Canajoharie Central School.

She met Leland Walrath at Shineman’s, a local dairy bar in Canajoharie, where she was working and where Lee would go to get a milkshake during breaks from the nearby Beech-Nut factory.  They married on February 6, 1960, settling first in Nelliston, NY, then moving to Salem in 1964, where they settled down and raised their family.  She was a great mom and a supportive and loving wife.  She was very proud of her grandchildren and loved being a part of their lives.

Carol worked at Salem Central School in food service for 25 years, serving up hot lunches to students, always greeting them with a smile.  Upon retirement, Carol remained active, focusing her energy on her community.  She served as the Deputy Town Clerk for the Town of Salem, manned elections polls, worked at the Washington County Fair, and drove seniors to medical appointments.  Her volunteerism saw her visiting nursing homes with her dachshund, Heidi, who was could always be found at her side.  She worked at the Shoppe Off Broadway and at the local food pantry, serving in a leadership role.  She was always ready to lend a hand when needed.  A long-time member of the Salem United Methodist Church, Carol served in many capacities.  She was a Sunday School teacher, helped with the various dinners the church offered up, and served on numerous committees.

Carol had a green thumb and she was known for her beautiful flowerbeds, which she enjoyed sharing with whomever visited.  She could be found knitting, reading, and baking, with batches of chocolate chips cookies always in her kitchen.

An adventurous spirit, Carol enjoyed camping, biking on Cape Cod, as well cross-country skiing and kayaking in the Adirondacks and along the coast of Maine, which she loved to visit.  She loved to go on trips with the local senior groups, whether it was to attend a local theater production or traveling west to visit national parks.

In addition to her parents, Carol is predeceased by her brother, Arthur Kruppenbacher and her sister, Dorothy Scherer.

Carol is survived by her loving and devoted husband as well as her children, Christine (John) Hubbard of Salem, Phillip (Connie) Walrath of Glens Falls, and Leigh (Carolyn) Walrath of Saranac Lake, and her two grandsons, Jeremy Ferris of Providence, Rhode Island, and Thomas Ferris and his partner, Holly Rippon-Butler, of Schuylerville.  She is also survived by her brother David Kruppenbacher, her sister, Evelyn Keating, numerous nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews, step-grandchildren and her furry sidekicks, Lucy & Hanna.

Her family wishes to thank the caring and dedicated staff at The Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Hoosick Falls, Community Hospice, Fort Hudson, and the Salem and Cambridge Rescue Squads.
