Cambridge - Arlene (Eddy) English, (also known as Gram) of Cambridge, who recently celebrated her 101st birthday passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.
She was born November 26, 1922 in Buskirk the daughter of the late Charles and Hulda (Baker) Eddy. Raised and educated locally, she was a graduate of Hoosick Falls Central School. On February 28, 1942, she married Benjamin English.
Arlene began her work career working in various departments with the New York State Department of State, a position she held for many years. Always ambitious, she worked one night a week at Cambridge Valley Livestock. In later years, she worked at the Rite Aid in Cambridge at the pharmacy counter and also refreshed the greeting cards for each season and holiday.
Always supportive of her husband, Ben and the farming industry, she was a member of the
Farm Bureau, the Home Bureau, and served on the board at the Washington County Fair. Arlene was active in the community and participated in local church choirs and church activities. She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Washington County Republican Committee and served as an election inspector. Never wanting to stay idle, Arlene enjoyed cooking for the family farm, sewing, baking, reading, and camping.
Arlene was blessed throughout the years with a beautiful family. She reveled in their accomplishments and cherished the time they spent together. She greeted everyone with a smile and always responded pleasantries with she was “fine and dandy.”
In addition to her parents and husband; Arlene mourned her son, David Charles English; granddaughter, Angie English Pemrick; and siblings, Wells (Wilma) Eddy, Charles (Luella) Eddy, Elwarda (Archie) Timberlin.
Arlene is survived by devoted daughter and son in law, Donna (Donald) Kratzenberg-Grippe of Whitesboro, NY; her son, Donald “Red” (Paddi Krauss) English of Cambridge, a daughter-in-law, Donna English of Greenwich; grandchildren, Julie (Bruce) Alsente, Ben (Amie) English, Brian (Wendy) English all of Easton, Janelle (Doug) Moore of Greenwich, Trish English of Cambridge, Ondrea (Steve) Grippe Getz of Marcy, Donald “Donnie” English of Cambridge, and Alysa (Rod) Woods of Cambridge and many great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Cambridge. The outstanding care and compassion they shared with Arlene through the years was so appreciated and will not be forgotten.
Funeral services will be 4:00 pm Sunday, December 17, 2023 at Jacobs Well Church, 29 West Main St., Cambridge. A calling hour will be 1 hour prior to the service.
Interment will be at Woodlands Cemetery in Cambridge on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 1:30 pm.
