Cambridge, NY - Wayne C. Laverty, MD, age 86, of Cambridge, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, June 20, 2026, at his residence with his family by his side.
Born July 22, 1939, in Cambridge, and grew up on Academy Street also known as Bucktown. He was the son of the late Hugh “Scotty” and Mildred (Bates) Laverty. Wayne graduated from Cambridge Central School in 1958 where he played high school football. He continued his education at Union College in Schenectady and later graduated from Albany Medical College, receiving his medical degree.
Following medical school, Wayne was drafted into the U.S. Navy. After his discharge, he remained active with the reserves attaining the rank of Commander and also completed his fellowship at the Long Beach Veterans Hospital in California. In 1974, he established his own cardiology practice in Montebello, California. He enjoyed a successful career caring for his patients for 25 years before retiring in 2000.
For several years following his retirement, Wayne and his wife spent their summers in Cambridge. They traveled back and forth to California until they returned to live permanently in Cambridge in 2005, where Wayne remained active in his community. He was a dedicated member of the American Legion Captain Maxson Post 634 in Cambridge, serving as Post Commander and as Washington County Commander. He also taught at the American Legion College in Syracuse.
Wayne enjoyed a variety of hobbies throughout his life. He was an avid fisherman who looked forward to annual fishing trips to Alaska and enjoyed deep sea fishing. He also enjoyed gardening and photography and maintained his own darkroom where he developed photographs. For many years, he ran marathons in California and ran in the Boston marathon two times. When Wayne was young, he was a Boy Scout and also a Eagle Scout.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 40 years, Janice Burch Laverty; his sister, Susan (David) Skiff of Sanford, North Carolina; his nephews, Wayne (Julie) Laverty of Cambridge and Scott (Aimee) Skiff of West Rupert, Vermont; his sisters-in-law, Jean Laverty of Tempe, Arizona, and Cathy Fedler Ackley of Greenwich; as well as many additional nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Wally Fedler and Neale Laverty, and an infant brother.
Military honors will be held at 10 am Friday, June 26, 2026 at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville, New York. A celebration of Wayne’s life will begin at 12 pm Friday at the American Legion Captain Maxson Post, 2106 State Route 22, Cambridge.
