Salem, NY - Born on St. Patrick's Day, 1951 in Danbury, CT, Stu was the eldest son of the late Stuart Allen Bartow, Sr. and Mary Christine Hanley Bartow.
Stu was a beloved Distinguished Professor at SUNY Adirondack, where he taught for three decades, winning the Chancellor's Award. He specialized in British literature, especially Blake, Keats, and Shakespeare. He taught himself Middle English to better appreciate the works he loved. Stu dedicated his life to fostering creativity.
He wrote many books of poetry, as well as a collection of lyric essays on fly fishing, Teaching Trout to Talk: Zen and the Art of Small-Stream Fly Fishing. His books of poems include Whelk, Reasons to Hate the Sky, Questions for the Sphinx, Einstein's Lawn, and Green Midnight. Recently he had turned to haiku, publishing several volumes of these: Quaking Marsh, One Branch, and Full Moon Radio, as well as a collection of haibun (lyrical essays combined with haiku), Invisible Dictionary.
Stu was a master gardener and lifelong environmentalist. He loved birds, insects, and the stars, as well as baseball and football, and classic horror films. After a stint in the Peace Corps in Fiji, where he met his wife, Susana, he ran the family exterminating business in Danbury, CT. He moved to Salem, NY to earn his PhD in English literature from SUNY at Albany and was enchanted by the natural beauty of Upstate New York. He was a founding member of the Battenkill Conservancy and served as Chair for the past 19 years.
In addition to his parents, Stu was predeceased by his siblings, Patricia Bartow, and Bradley Bartow.
