Obituary

Manchester, VT - Sandra L. "Nana" Cary, age 81, of Manchester, Vermont, departed this life on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

Born on April 14, 1944, in Watertown, New York, Sandra was the daughter of the late Wilfred and Marguerite (Vosburgh) Jones. Raised in Clayton, New York, she was a graduate of Clayton High School and subsequently pursued her studies in accounting in Syracuse. This professional foundation served her throughout her distinguished career, notably during her tenure as an accountant with the Vermont Country Store in Manchester. An industrious spirit, Sandra also co-owned and operated a private cleaning business with her husband for fifteen years, a testament to her dedication and work ethic.

A woman of steadfast faith and community conviction, Sandra was a devoted member of the United Church of Dorset and East Rupert where she remained active in various parish endeavors. Beyond her formal commitments, she found fulfillment in the simple graces of life—cherishing the fellowship of neighbors during their frequent luncheons and finding respite in the narratives of Hallmark cinema. Above all, her primary vocation was the love and care she extended to her family.

Sandra was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 27 years, Elmer Cary, Sr., who passed on September 17, 2009. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Danny Jones, Bill Anger, and Kathy Naputi.

Sandra is survived by her children: John (Erin) Finnegan of Glens Falls, NY; James (Tina) Finnegan of Glens Falls, NY; and Michael (Tarra) Finnegan of West Rupert, VT. She is further survived by her step-sons, Herb (Rose) Cary of Granville, NY, and Terry (Jackie) Cary of Manchester, VT; her brother, Alan (Linette) Jones of Houston, TX; seven grandchildren: John Finnegan, Jr., Jolene Finnegan, James Finnegan, Jr., Victoria Finnegan, Michael Finnegan, Jr., Amanda Finnegan (Jesse Vise), and Alex Finnegan; and her great-grandchildren, Noah Vise, Daniel Finnegan, and many others who will miss her dearly.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am Saturday, February, 21, 2026 at the United Church of Dorset and East Rupert, 143 Church St., Dorset, VT.

Spring interment will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Salem, NY.
