Obituary

Cambridge, NY - Sally Mae King (Crawford), 90, of Cambridge, N.Y. passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 3, 2026, with Dawn by her side, at Saint Peters Hospital in Albany, N.Y.

Sally was born in Bennington, VT in 1935 to Elmer and Marion Crawford, a twin to her sister Sue (Crawford) Bull. Sally was the last surviving child of 11 children born to Elmer and Marion. Sally attended school at Bennington and shared many happy stories of life in a big family. Sally told of her father coming home twice a day from work to feed the coal stoves, always making sure his girls had new hair ribbons and Easter dresses; her mother making sure everyone had their favorite desserts on Sundays after church and keeping a well-run home even during lean times. Sally was well known for being hard-working, proving herself capable and contributing wherever she could. She began keeping the accounting books and doing payroll for her father's painting and papering business at the age of 11. At 12 she started working for Sal Sleeman, a local grocery store owner. She enjoyed performing as a majorette in her high school and held countless other jobs, including sewing shirts at the Bennington Shirt Factory for service men when she was 15 (she conveniently forgot her paperwork until she turned 16).  Sally married her high school sweetheart, the love of her life, James K King, on July 21, 1952.  Sally and James shared a long partnership of marriage, parenthood, business and service to their community and church. The first 4 years of marriage her husband James did 4 years of active service in the Navy, serving on the USS Tripoli in the Korean War. She continued to work, care for her two young boys they welcomed and continue investing in the home they were building in Shaftsbury while James was in the Service. When he returned, James worked for a bakery in Manchester for a time before the couple opened their first bakery in the summer of 1957 in Cambridge, N.Y. Sally and James created a successful business that operated at the same store front for 40 years. They put on 7 additions to the building in that time and built a wholesale business to include over 30 accounts. Sally specialized in cake decorating amongst her many other duties both in the shop and office. A favorite story is of Sally putting a 3-tier fresh flower wedding cake in the back of her station wagon, driving it to Boston, and winning the "Best New Design" award at the convention for Massachusetts Retail Bakers Association, of which King Bakery was a member. Sally and James were partners in many business and real estate ventures in Cambridge, notably VARAK Park and others. Sally was always involved, lending her skill set, painting and wallpapering the properties. After James passed away, she even assumed his position as Vice President of VARAK Park, taking on the responsibilities in the office which she knew so well from her lifetime in business. Sally was well known for her tireless energy, generous spirit, endless love and support for her family and community and her faith.

Sally was an active member at St. Luke's Church, serving as Vestry, Warden and Senior Warden. Sally was the longest serving warden in the history of St. Luke's Church. She was a proud member of the Cambridge Valley Chapter #570, order of the Eastern Star; Cambridge Lions, and American Society of Bakery Engineers.

Sally is preceded in death by her parents; Elmer W Crawford and Marion Crawford; husband, James K King; her ten siblings; and 2 sons, Timothy King and Randi King.

Sally is survived by: her son James K. King II and Jana King of Cambridge, N.Y.; Dawn Case of Eagle Bridge, N.Y.; her granddaughters, Holly King (Elijah Enzensperger) of Cambridge, N.Y. and Robyn (Michael) Schanzlin of Cambridge, N.Y.; great grandchildren, Ella (King) Ruebel, Hunter Schanzlin, Reed Schanzlin and Marlowe Schanzlin; along with a great number of cherished nieces and nephews.
