Greenwich, NY - Richard George Horning, age 73, of Greenwich, NY passed away at Saratoga Hospital after a long illness on Monday, July 27, 2026. He was born in Paterson, New Jersey, the middle child of George C. Horning and Winifred A. (Stewart) Horning. He graduated from Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School in 1971. He went on to earn his B.S. in Economics at SUNY Plattsburgh in 1975 and his M.S. in Computer Science at SUNY Albany in 1983.
Rick worked for over 40 years in the health care information technology field. He began his career at Glens Falls Hospital in the IT Department as a computer analyst in 1983. He later worked as an interface architect at Visual Med in Montreal, developing some of the first paperless electronic record systems for hospitals throughout North America. He retired from Capital Care Physicians Group in Albany, New York in 2018. Throughout his career, Rick’s colleagues valued him as a leader and a mentor, whose experience and attention to detail made him an indispensable member of the team.
Rick was a gentle, caring, and generous man with a perpetually optimistic outlook toward life. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a silly side that never failed to delight his two sons. He was an avid skier and tennis player, and he enjoyed biking, hiking, and camping with his family on weekends and holidays. He loved carpentry projects, mystery novels, and logic puzzles. In the words of his close friend and longtime tennis partner, Fred Fronhofer, Rick was “steady and dependable, someone you could always rely on.”
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Cheryl (Beatty) Horning, his sons, Sean (Jenn) Horning of Arvada, CO, Andrew (Ana) Horning of Stillwater, NY; his sister, Rita (Horning) Dagastino of Tampa, FL, his sister, Pat (Horning) VanderVeer of Charlton, NY, his brother, Jim (Michelle) Horning of Jacksonville, FL, his brother-in-law, Jeffrey (Linda) Beatty, his two granddaughters Leah and Sarah Horning, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents George and Winifred Horning, his sister Theresa (Horning) Lovelace, and his infant son, Christopher Horning.
A memorial service and burial will be held at 11am on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at New Skete Monastery, 273 New Skete Lane, Cambridge, NY.
