Gansevoort - Ormen "Skip" Gilliland, 84, of Gansevoort, passed away Friday, December 29, 2023 at the home of his daughter in Eagle Bridge.
He was born August 11, 1939 in Morristown, NJ the son of the late Orrin and Tressia (Elam) Gilliland.
Skip attended schools in Lindenhurst, NY and served his country with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Era.
Skip learned how to weld while serving in the Navy and continued his career as a welder for Oyster Bay Iron Works in Oyster Bay, NY and A & P Iron Works on Long Island. He then moved to the local area and was a welder for Mullen Iron Works in South Glens Falls and also for Finch Pruyn in Glens Falls retiring in 2001. In retirement, he worked for Donald W. Dulmer Tree Surgeon in Greenwich for approximately 4 years.
Skip loved his homing pigeons and raced them competitively and was a member of the Adirondack Racing Pigeon Club. He loved horses and enjoyed taking people on sleigh rides with them during the winter time. Skip also liked to go fishing, kayaking, woodworking, welding, whether it was at work or at home. He made many types of metal art from his expertise of welding. Most importantly, Skip loved spending time with his family. He was a proud supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
In addition to his parents, Skip was predeceased by his wife, Claudia Johnson Gilliland who passed away in 2011; sisters, Judy Reinecke and Joyce Rodigue; brother, Vernon Gilliland; step-grandson, Derreck Keath.
Skip is survived by his children, Tammy (Paul) Weber of Eagle Bridge and Todd Gilliland of Cambridge; step-children, Laura (Chad) Periard of Salem, Kevin Keath of Indian Lake, Daniel (Sandra) Keath of Cambridge, Nicholas Rossi of Connecticut and Michael Rossi of Florida; sister, Edith (Phillip) Aardsma of Port St. Lucie, FL; grandchildren, Ashley Bennett and Alysha Gilliland; step-grandchildren, Dominick Rossi, Anthony Rossi, Michael (Tianna Higgins) Weber; great grandchild, Preston Racicot; step-great grandchild, Joanna Weber and many other step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren and nieces & nephews.
A service with military honors will be at 11 am Thursday, January 11, 2024 at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville with Rev. Debbie Earthrowl officiating.
