Obituary

Buskirk-Murray J. Moore, 87, of Buskirk, passed away peacefully at Ellis Hospital on Thursday, February 16, 2017, from complications of a recent stroke. Murray and his wife, Nancy (McMillan), who survives, happily resided in Buskirk, NY. They were married March 7, 1980.

Murray was born June 27, 1929, in Amsterdam, New York. He was the eldest of three sons born to Ira and Louise (Schunk) Moore of Fonda, New York. Early in Murray's life, the family purchased St. Croix dairy farm, and moved to Master Street, Valley Falls, New York. Academics and Murray were somewhat incompatible; nevertheless, Murray graduated from Hoosic Valley in 1946. He married Marion Brownell in September, 1952.

Stories recalled by Murray suggest that during his high school years, he had a penchant for driving fast and he was known to road race to win a bet. In his late teens, Murray made a deal to purchase some livestock. That deal was followed by seventy years of buying, selling, and trucking countless cows, horses, sheep, goats, chickens, and pigs, and brokering deals for land, antiques, vehicles, musical instruments, and farm machinery.

For many years, he owned and operated Moore's Lime and Fertilizer. During the 1960s, Murray served on the Hoosic Valley Board of Education and was a member of the Johnsonville Volunteer Fire Department.

In addition to his wife, Nancy, Murray is survived by his children David (Theresa) Moore, Valley Falls, NY; Duane (Karen) Moore Valley Falls, NY; Linda Moore, Buskirk, NY; Donna (Michael) Nolan, Cambridge NY; Jill (Fred) Anderson, Melrose NY; Neil (Beverly) Moore, Valley Falls, NY; and Jerry (Mary Jo) Moore, Schaghticoke NY; and his step-children, Dawn Martindale, Warrensburg, NY; William Richard "Richie" Nolan, Shushan, NY; and Brian Nolan, Troy, NY. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Murray was predeceased by his brothers, Charles and Kenneth.

A service will be held Monday, February 20, 2017, at 1:00 PM, at Cambridge United Methodist Church, 41 East Main Street, Cambridge, with Rev. Debbie Earthrowl officiating. During the service, there will be an opportunity to honor Murray by sharing stories or memories of his life. Calling hours will precede the service, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, at the church.
