Salem-Martin D. Wescott, 85, of Salem, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 10, 2016 at Glens Falls Hospital.
Born August 10, 1930 in Whitehall, he was the son of the late Ralph and Elnora (Whalen) Wescott.
Marty graduated from Whitehall High School and worked for the D&H Railroad for 13 years and he then became a New York State Trooper serving for 20 years. Marty was then elected as Sheriff of Washington County, a position he held for 13 years until he retired in 1991.
Marty was a member of Holy Cross Church in Salem and was the first President of the Parish Council; he was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #10848 and had served as the financial secretary for 13 years. Marty was a lifetime member of the NYS Sheriff's Association and was a Cub and Scout Master of Troop 61 in Salem for many years. He also served in the National Guard for 10 years.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, David Wescott and two sisters, Louise Smith and Katherine Martindale.
Marty is survived by his wife of 64 years, Harriet Boulett Wescott; his children, Daniel (Diane) Wescott of Granville, Leonard (Grace) Wescott of Queensbury, Richard (Ruth) Wescott of Salem, Ronald (Ann) Wescott of Stockbridge, VT, Norene (Fredrick) Russo of Salem and Linda (Robert) Toernor of Sea Brook, TX. He also leaves behind 2 brothers and a sister, Robert Wescott of Whitehall, Richard Wescott of Dresden and Lorayne Gebo of Whitehall; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Wescott of Whitehall; 14 grandchildren, Lisa, Kyle, Jarrod, Collin, Raven, Ryan, Adam, Chad, Dana, Jon-Michael, Erika, Patricia, Bobby and Katherine. He also has 15 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and 2 special neighbors who were like grandchildren to him, Andrew and Jackie Scanlon and also his special caregiver, Marilyn Dumas.
Calling hours will be 5-8 pm Sunday, March 13, 2016 at the McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home, 19 East Broadway, Salem.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Monday, March 14, 2016 at Holy Cross Church, 249 North Main Street, Salem.
