Salem, NY – Lawrence E. “Larry” McCauley, 90, of Salem, passed away Saturday, August 29, 2026 at Glens Falls Hospital.
Larry was born January 25, 1936, in Salem, the son of the late Lawrence and Etta (Robbins) McCauley, and was a lifelong resident of the community. He graduated from Salem Washington Academy in 1953 and proudly served his country in the United States Army, stationed in Germany from 1954 to 1955.
Following his military service, Larry owned and operated a milk trucking business for 18 years, from 1955 to 1973. In 1970, he became co-owner of McCauley and Tucker Oil Company in Salem, where he remained until 1998.
Larry was deeply committed to his community and gave many years of service to several local organizations. He was a member of the Salem Volunteer Fire Department for nearly 70 years and served as president for 43 years. He was also a founding member of the Salem Pistol and Rifle Club, where he served as secretary for more than 50 years. An avid shooting competitor, Larry enjoyed both Cowboy Action and Bullseye Pistol shooting.
He was an active outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time in the outdoors. Larry was a lifelong member of the Salem United Methodist Church, where he attended throughout his life. He also served as Salem Town Supervisor from 1979 to 1990 and was a longtime board member of Evergreen Cemetery in Salem. He was a member of the Francis J. Clark American Legion Post in Salem.
Larry will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his community, and the many organizations to which he devoted so much of his life.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Kay McCauley; his children, Kathi McCauley, Nancy and her husband Eric Kenney, Jim McCauley and his wife Sloan Tyler, and Jack McCauley and Heather Goossen; his grandchildren, Michele Kenney, Alycia McCauley, Michael and his wife Lexee McCauley, Madison Tyler, Graham McCauley, and Payton McCauley; and his great-grandchildren, Scottie McCauley and Mara McCauley.
Calling hours will be held Friday, September 11, 2026, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home, 19 East Broadway, Salem, NY.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the Salem United Methodist Church, 29 West Broadway, Salem, with Rev. Debbie Earthrowl officiating. Interment with military honors will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Salem. A reception will follow at the Salem Vol. Fire Department.
