John Edward Mangels, 78, passed away at his home in upstate Greenwich, New York, on August 18, 2023.
John leaves behind his wife Robin of 31 years and his beloved son John Hobbs. John was predeceased by his father, John Mangels, his mother, Kathryn (Hohmann) Mangels, and his brother, Richard Mangels. John was a loving husband and father, a reliable colleague, and a faithful and sincere friend.
John was born in New Rochelle, New York on July 13, 1945. He a 1967 graduate of the State University of New York Maritime College, where he excelled academically (Dean's List), was proactive in extra-curricular activities, and was selected for leadership positions. In addition to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Transportation, John graduated with a U.S. Coast Guard Third Mates's License and a U.S. Navy Commission as Ensign in the Naval Reserve.
John loved ships, boats, and the sea. After graduation, he sailed for several years as a ship's officer in the U.S. Merchant Marine, and then began a shoreside career at the Stolt-Nielsen Transportation Group in Greenwich, Connecticut where he worked for nearly thirty years in the international maritime industry. After retiring from Stolt-Nielsen, John worked for the Department of Homeland Security as well as the U.S. Coast Guard specializing in International Port Security Operations in Washington, DC.
He was a proud owner of several progressively larger Hatteras Yachts.
The family is planning a memorial event to be held, at a later date.
