Shushan, NY - John “Jack” Flanagan, 75, passed away in his home peacefully surrounded by his wife and children on Sunday, August 9, 2026.

Jack was born November 30, 1950, in New Milford, CT to the late John Thomas Flanagan and Catherine Theresa Flanagan.

Jack was a decorated Vietnam War veteran who honorably served in the United States Army with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, known as the “Blackhorse Regiment.” Following his service, Jack began a 40-year career as a truck driver. He took pride in his work and enjoyed the opportunity it gave him to see the country, traveling wherever the job took him and experiencing the many places and people along the way. His years on the road became an important part of his life and a career he devoted himself to for decades.

Jack is survived by his wife, Shirley. Jack and Shirley were married for 11 loving years. Jack is also survived by his four children; Kelly Flanagan, Cari (Brad) Vosganian, Jaclyn (Curtis) Nolan and Matthew Flanagan, Sr, his step-son, Justin (Rachel) Atwell, and his sister, Catherine Flanagan.

Jack also leaves behind 17 grandchildren; Megan Lynn Harrington, Katelynn (Aaron) Ethier, Ryan Michael (Kelly) Mulligan, Ashley Calkins, Thomas (Courtney) Donovan, Gillian Calkins, Emily Calkins, Lucas Nolan, Landon Nolan, Luella Nolan, Matthew Flanagan Jr, Dublin Atwell, Rome Atwell, and Ozzy Flanagan.

Additionally, 4 great grandchildren will remember Jack’s silly, fun personality; Adalyn Grace Harrington, Thiessen Carter Harrington, Rhona Ann Harrington and Harper Lee Ethier.

In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Burdett and Joann Benson, and stepdaughter, Tabitha Atwell.

When he wasn’t behind the wheel of a truck, Jack could most often be found doing the things he enjoyed most, spending time with the people he loved. He rarely missed an opportunity to watch his children and grandchildren play sports, proudly cheering them on from the sidelines. He loved taking his boat out on the water to fish, tinkering and working on projects in his garage, and finding any excuse to spend time with friends and family.

Jack had a way of making ordinary moments memorable. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and a loyal friend who never took himself too seriously. He loved telling jokes, handing out playful nicknames, and giving everyone around him a reason to laugh. He enjoyed good conversation, good company, and a good cup of coffee. Whether gathered around the kitchen table, sitting in the garage, watching a game, or simply enjoying a quiet afternoon, Jack was happiest when he was surrounded by his people. His warmth and humor will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Calling hours are Saturday, August 15, 2026 from 12-2 pm at the McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home, 19 East Broadway, Salem. A service will begin at 2 pm with Rev. Carol Finke officiating.
