West Rupert, VT – Geraldine I. “Gerry” Sherman, 85, of West Rupert, passed away Saturday, August 8, 2026 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT.

Born March 30, 1941 in Granville, NY, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Ida (LaBatt) Matteson. Gerry attended Salem Washington Academy.

Gerry assisted with the family farm from time to time and worked at the Salem Shirt Factory and assisted with elderly care in Salem in her younger years. She worked at the Dorset School, the Enchanted Doll House in Dorset, and the Orvis Company in Manchester. She often spoke of the challenges of traveling to work during the winter months, especially going over Rupert Mountain.

Gerry was active in her community and enjoyed helping with various 4-H clubs. She also enjoyed helping with events at the Rupert Volunteer Fire Department and was known for baking for the annual Rupert Old Home Days. She was a member of the Mt. Anthony Grange and the Home Extension Agency.

Gerry enjoyed listening to country music from her brother-in-law, Walt “Smokey” Greene and her brother Bill and others in the family who had great musical talent. Gerry enjoyed gardening and loved her dogs and other pets throughout the years. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gerry is survived by her children, Lynn (Gary) Townsend of Sunderland, VT, Steven (Laura) Sherman of Cambridge, NY, Wendy Ward of West Rupert, VT, and Jonathan Sherman of Dorset, VT; her grandchildren, Travis (Holly) Keys, Tara Keys, Kaitlyn (Vance) St. Peter, Allison (Keegan) Luck, Joshua Sherman, Emily (Jordan) Simkins, Zachary (Abbie) Sherman and Tyler (Abby) Brown; her great-grandchildren, Caden, Zoey, Holden, Austin, Elliot, Kinsley, Tyler, Willow, Natalie and Paisley; her former husband, Lawrence Grant of Manchester, VT; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, Gerry was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Charles A. Sherman, Jr.; and her siblings, Claude Matteson, Jr., Almond “Zeke” Matteson, Donald Matteson, William Matteson, Robert Matteson, Mary Forrett, Patricia Greene and Ruth Cary.

A calling hour will be held Thursday, August 13, 2026, from 12 to 1 p.m. at the McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home, 19 East Broadway, Salem, NY. A service will follow the calling hour at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Rupert Cemetery in Rupert, VT. A reception will follow at the Rupert Community Building.
