Obituary

Salem - George E. Barton, 72, formerly of Salem, passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon, August 2, 2025, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in West Rupert, Vermont.

Born in Troy, New York on October 2, 1952, he was the son of the late George and Janet (Burns) Barton. George was educated at Greenwich High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army. Following his active duty, he continued his service in the National Guard for 18 years.

Throughout his professional life, Mr. Barton was known for his dedication and work ethic. He was employed as a truck driver for the former Wilmot Egg Farm in Cambridge, later worked as a mechanic for Carmody Ford in Greenwich, and concluded his career at Dailey Concrete in Shaftsbury, Vermont.

He was a member of the Paralyzed Veterans Association in New York City and was deeply committed to supporting fellow servicemen and women. In his personal life, Mr. Barton enjoyed fishing, golfing, artistic pursuits, photography, and video games, all of which brought him great enjoyment and reflected his wide range of interests.

Above all, George was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 51 years, Mary Getty Barton, who passed on December 18, 2023; his sister, Hilda Sylvester in 2023, as well as by a granddaughter, Kirsten Barton, in 1994.

He is survived by his children: Amy (Sam) Ruggles of Salem; Christine (Glenn) Morey of West Rupert, Vermont; and David Barton of Florida. He is also survived by his siblings: Paul Goman of Texas; Kenneth Goman of Ballston Spa; and Beatrice Perkins of Greenwich.

Mr. Barton leaves behind thirteen grandchildren: Samuel, Zach, Daniel, Makayla, Grace, Abi, Darryn, Chloe, Lynzie, Abby, Zechariah, Sully, and Ezb; and ten great-grandchildren: Bentley, Avan, Shieloh, Sadie, Timothy III, Austin, Everleigh, Oaklyn, Addelyne and Zachary Jr. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be at 11 am Saturday, September 27, 2025 at Evergreen Cemetery (new section) in Salem with Rev. Debbie Earthrowl officiating.
