West Hebron-Frederick A. Michel, 70, of West Hebron, passed away Sunday afternoon, September 11, 2016 at Glens Falls Hospital.
Fred was born February 7, 1946 in Newark, NJ and was the son of the late Frederick H. and Mary Adamcyk Michel.
Fred graduated from Cedar Grove High School in Cedar Grove, NJ and earned his bachelor's degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, NJ. He served in the Army National Guard from 1966 to 1972.
He was a long-distance driver for North American Van Lines of Ft. Wayne, Indiana for 12 years. He drove for Agway and then Cargill for many years delivering feed to many local farms in the area. Prior to his accident, Fred was a truck driver for Swift Trucking until 2012.
Fred was a member of Holy Cross Church in Salem and a member of the K of C Council 10848 in Salem. Fred loved history and anything mechanical which he enjoyed repairing. He was an avid motorcycle rider, especially dirt bikes where he would participate in competitions. He also enjoyed skiing, snow-boarding, mountain biking and feeding the birds with his grandchildren.
Fred was a member of the New England Trail Riders, the Pine Tree Trail Riders, and the American Motorcycle Association.
In addition to his parents, Fred was also predeceased by a brother, Jeffrey Michel.
Fred is survived by his wife of 48 years, Christine Fogerty Michel whom he married November 18, 1967; his children, Lisa (Eric) Steele of Granville, OH, Jennifer (Robert) Lawrence of Hartford, NY, Sara (Robert) Campbell of Worcester, MA and Keith (Anna) Michel of Olympia, WA.
Fred is also survived by his brother, Lawrence (Lorraine) Michel of Haworth, NJ; his 6 cherished grandchildren, Grace Steele, Matthew Steele, Jay Lawrence, Hannah Lawrence, Zoe Campbell & Xander Michel.
Calling hours will be held Friday, September 16, 2016 from 4-7 pm at the McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home, 19 East Broadway, Salem.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Holy Cross Church, 249 North Main Street, Salem.
