Donald Arthur
Woelfersheim
Dec 9, 1943 — Sep 10, 2016
Cambridge-It is with both sadness and joy that we tell you that Donald Arthur Woelfersheim passed away at home on Saturday, September 10, 2016 with his loved ones by his side. We say sadness because we love him dearly as husband, father, grandfather and friend; joy because we know he has gone into the arms of Jesus, his Lord and Savior. Don was born on December 9, 1943 in Troy, NY, the youngest of eight children born to Frederick and Ruth (Tremper) Woelfersheim. Don spent over 15 years battling Parkinson's disease. Don was raised in Speigletown and Melrose, NY. He attended the little one room schoolhouse on Route 40 as an early elementary student and then attended Hoosic Valley Central School in Schaghticoke, graduating in 1962. While in high school, Don ran track, setting numerous records. He was also a member of the color guard in the Hoosic Valley Fife and Drum Corps. After high school, Don spent two and a half years at SUNY Fredonia with an Elementary Education major and art minor. Unfortunately, his money ran out before he completed his studies and he joined the Army for three years, spending two and a half years in Germany as a dog handler. When he returned he spent time working as an orderly at the Leonard Hospital and as cottage staff at Berkshire Farm for Boys. While there, he started attending Pittsfield Assembly of God Church where he met the Lord. Don moved to Cambridge, where he earned his LPN at Mary McClellan Nursing School and later his RN at Maria College. He also met his wife, Judith while attending the Coila Church. He worked for many years at Mary McClellan at the Skilled Nursing Facility, where he provided not only wonderful nursing care but also friendship, laughter, and entertainment. In later years, he worked at Central Nursing Service in Albany, providing private duty care. A very artistic man, Don found great joy in painting, drawing, and creating wire figurines. Don also loved a good prank, pun, or joke. He loved to bring laughter to others. He cared for many in his church family and the community with a loving touch and a ready smile. He took great pride in his children, Christa and Matthew, their spouses and his grandchildren. He loved to spend time outdoors, especially in his garden, building his rock wall…and then moving it, and in later years building his water gardens. In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by his sisters, Ruth (Seth) Aldrich, and Edith, as well as brother's Fred (Norma), Robert (Nancy), and Alfred (Margarita). In addition to his wife of 40 years, Judith of Cambridge, NY, he is survived by daughter Christa (David) Berthiaume of Cambridge, son Matthew (Ann) Woelfersheim of Cambridge, grandchildren Drew, Ellie, Charonne, and Jo Berthiaume and Ryan and Eli Woelfersheim. He is also survived by a sister Kathryn (James) Welch of Valley Falls, NY, Janice (Paul) Vincent of Moncks Corner, SC and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to thank the Fort Hudson home care for their help over the past few years and especially caregivers Jennifer Gille, Wendy Hayes, and April Moyer who have spent huge numbers of hours providing wonderful care and love to Don. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to The Coila Church, 93 State Route 372, Cambridge NY, specifically for the building fund. Visiting hours will be held at The Coila Church, Friday, September 16, 2016 from 6 to 9 pm. Funeral Services will be held at 10 am on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at The Coila Church with interment to follow at Woodlands Cemetery.
