Cambridge-Donald E. Brennan, 88, of Cambridge, passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. Born April 14, 1928 in North Adams, MA, he was the son of the late Edward and Ethel Sanborn Brennan. Donald attended Drury High School in North Adams. He left high school before graduating to enlist in the U.S. Navy and he served from 1946 to 1948. After he was discharged from the Navy, he continued his high school education at Tilton Prep School in Tilton, NH where he graduated. Donald graduated from New England College in Henniker, NH where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in education. He then graduated with a Master's Degree from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams. He began his career at Cambridge Central School as a 5th and 6th grade teacher and then became a Guidance Counselor. He coached Junior High Basketball, Varsity Baseball and was an Assistant Football Coach. He taught at CCS for thirty years. He was also a life guard at Lake Lauderdale during the summers. Donald's favorite spot on earth was Hedges Lake. He is widely remembered by lake residents for his daily laps around the lake. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Cambridge where he had served as a greeter and usher. After his retirement he served on the Mary McClellan Hospital board and was a literacy volunteer. He especially enjoyed watching his grand-children participate in sports at CCS and never missed a game. He was also an ardent fan of Cambridge Football and would arrive long before kick-off to claim his favorite seat on the fifty yard line in the bleacher's top row. Donald is survived by his wife of 60 years, Eileen Agnes Bates Brennan whom he married August 13, 1955; his children, Terence A. (Terese) Brennan and Colleen (Mark) Burton, both of Cambridge. His grandchildren, Aaron (Catherine) Burton, Kevin (Maria) Burton, Amber Burton, Ryan Brennan, Kate Brennan, Keelin (James) Schultheis; great grandchildren, Sam Burton, Jack Burton, Evelyn Burton, Kaylee Burton, Landry Burton, Brennan Schultheis and Emmett Schultheis. He is also survived by a sister, Edwina Brown of Orleans, MA and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by a brother, Frank Brennan.
A memorial Mass will be at 10:00 am August 12, 2016 at Holy Cross Church, 249 North Main Street, Salem with The Very Reverand Thomas Zelker officiating. A reception for family and friends will be in the church hall following the mass and everyone is cordially invited.
Interment will take place at a later date in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.
