Easton, NY – Carolyn Alice Paine, passed away at the Home of the Good Shepherd, Moreau, NY on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. She was the daughter of Dr. Charles S. and Alice Dunn Paine of Bristol, VT. She was a MS Education graduate of the University of Vermont.

After a few years of teaching, she wrote for Wesleyan University for articles in the Weekly Reader and study guides for elementary students. Later she was on the staff at Learning Magazine and as a free lance writer for other teacher’s magazines. In later years she spent many summers as a docent at Hildene in Manchester, VT. She was a familiar face at the Easton NY Library where she was an assistant librarian. As a volunteer she worked at Hubbard Hall and was a part of the Nuclear Freeze group and the Lantern Remembrance Group at Lake Lauderdale. She maintained friendships with the many people she met through work and volunteer activities.

A writer at heart, she will be remembered for her witty verses she sent to friends and family on birthdays, anniversaries and celebrations and for the thoughtful notes she sent to them in times of loss.

She was fortunate to live in a friendly and caring neighborhood in Easton, NY where she enjoyed the sense of community there for 45 years. She loved her home, her woods, the roadside wildflowers she saw on her walks, and the wildlife that came to her back yard (maybe not the bear).

Carolyn was an active member of the South Cambridge United Methodist Church, where she often did the children’s story, and always made sure there was fresh coffee at the gatherings and flowers or holiday greens in the planters in front of the church. She greatly appreciated the support of her church family and her friends during these last few months.

She was predeceased by her brother Charles “Bill” Paine and her niece Sherri Ruggles.

She is survived by her sister Margaret “Peg” Underwood (John) and her sister-in-law Rae Palmer Paine, and also her nieces and nephews Christopher (Denise), William “Bill” (Betty) and Amy Paine, Kristen, John “Jack” (Andrea), and Brian Underwood.

A memorial service will be at 10 am Thursday, July 16, 2026 at the South Cambridge United Methodist Church, 2527 County Rte. 59A, Buskirk with Rev. Melissa Weatherwax officiating.
