Shushan-Martha Jewell Smyth, 90, of Shushan, passed away peacefully Friday, March 1, 2019 at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Hoosick Falls. Born July 25, 1928 in Blooming Grove, TX, she was the daughter of the late Tobe James and Margaret (Gantt) Parker.
Martha graduated from Blooming Grove High School. She eventually relocated to New York where she worked at IBM in Yorktown Heights, NY as a Lab Technician for 25 years retiring in 1991.
Martha enjoyed knitting and making her own clothing. She also had a passion for upholstering furniture, wallpapering, gardening and cooking.
In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her husband, James Urban Caldwell; a son, Stephan Caldwell; siblings, James and Edith.
Martha is survived by her children, James A. (Janene) Caldwell of Clarksville, VA, Robert D. (Lily) Caldwell of Hudson, NY, Victor Keith (Mary) Caldwell of Albany and Linda Jewell (Mark) Manley of Shushan.
She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Seth A. Caldwell, Corrine Lewis, Trevor Caldwell, Chloe Caldwell, Craig Connors, Heather Nash, Elaina Manley and Gabriel Manley and 8 great grandchildren.
Calling hours are from 1-3 pm on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at the Ackley, Ross & Gariepy Funeral Home, 73 West Main Street, Cambridge. A service will begin at 3:00 pm with Pastor Carol Finke officiating.
