Cambridge-Edward F. “Smokey” Walizer, 89, of Cambridge, passed away Sunday, February 25, 2018 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.
Born in Schaghticoke on June 17, 1928, he was the son of the late Edward and Bessie (Sullivan) Walizer.
At the age of 17, Smokey began working for Woodflong/Lydall in Hoosick Falls, a career that spanned 50 ½ years until he retired. Following retirement, Smokey was a part-time security guard working weekends and holidays at Morcon in Cambridge for 16 years.
He was an honorary member of the Captain Maxson Post 634 American Legion in Cambridge; at one time a volunteer fireman in Hoosick Falls and a member of the Cambridge Senior Citizens. Smokey enjoyed bowling, stock car racing, playing cards and buying Take Five Lottery tickets. He loved being with his family and always had pets, especially dogs.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Rhodes Walizer who passed away September 30, 2000; siblings, Evelyn Hunt and Glen Walizer.
Smokey is survived by his children, Roland “Rick” Young, Jr. of Cambridge, Dawn Walizer of Cambridge, Darlene (Tom) Walizer Shewell of North Bennington and Clint (Maria) Walizer of Cambridge. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Cory Walizer, Josh (Michelle) Young, Amanda (Tim) Marcoux, Chris Shewell, Eddie (Brenda) Shewell, Lance Walizer, Desiree Walizer and Logan Walizer; 4 great grandchildren, Brayden Marcoux, Jordyn Marcoux, Colton Shewell and Oakland Shewell.
Calling hours are 4-7 pm Thursday, March 1, 2018 at the Ackley, Ross & Gariepy Funeral Home, 73 West Main St., Cambridge.
Funeral services will be Friday, February 2, 2018 at 11:00 am at the funeral home with Pastor Jim Bartholomew officiating. Interment will be at Rosewood Cemetery in White Creek.
