David McNitt Obituary

Shushan-David Angus McNitt, 82, resident of Shushan, passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at the Bennington Health & Rehabilitation Center.  

David was born in Cambridge, N.Y. at Mary McClellan Hospital on May 2, 1936. He was the second son of Helen (Kerr) McNitt and Paul Knight McNitt.

A 1955 graduate of Cambridge Central School, he attended Ithaca College and earned a BFA in Theater in 1959. His first jobs were in Broadway theaters in New York. He directed children’s theater for three different companies. He was the director of summer stock productions for 13 years at the Town and Country Playhouse in Salem, N.H.  For four years, he was the box office manager at the Weathervane Theater in Whitefield, N.H. In regional theater, he was the director and box office manager of the Park Theater Preforming Arts Center in Union City, N.J. He directed their famous yearly production of the Passion Play.

He moved to Shushan in 1993 to care for his brother, Harmin McNitt, after the passing of his mother, Louise McNitt, which he did for 25 years. While in Shushan, he became curator of the Shushan Covered Bridge Museum, as well as being President of the Washington County Council of Senior Citizens for 7 years. He was President of the Salem Seniors for 20 years. He was also a member of the Shushan Grange.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Harry E. McNitt and Harmin A. McNitt. He is survived by his nephews, Dage McNitt from Ballston Lake and Gabriel McNitt from Austin, TX, and niece Aurora McNitt Cepero from Saratoga Springs.

A calling hour will be from 10-11 am on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at the Shushan United Presbyterian Church, 730 County Route 64, Shushan.  A service will begin at 11 am with Pastor Carol Finke officiating.

Interment will be at Woodlands Cemetery in Cambridge at a later date.
