Herbert G. Eriksson

Shushan-Herbert Eriksson, age 94, passed away Thursday morning, October 26, 2017 in his home surrounded by his wife and daughters.  
Born September 23, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of John and Linnea Eriksson.  He grew up farming in Camden Valley.  He moved to New Jersey and married Doris Mattson in 1952.  He worked as a fine woodworker and later an architectural draftsman and designer for 30 years in River Vale, NJ where Herb and Doris raised their two daughters.  In 1988 they returned to Camden Valley in retirement to the home Herb built himself.  
Herb loved the land and the outdoors.  He took great joy in caring for his home in the valley.  He loved downhill skiing until retiring his skis at age 85.  What he is most remembered for is his passion and skill in photography.  This passion was lifelong and he often viewed life through a camera lens.  In recent years his photographs of notable people connected with the Battenkill River in the 1950s have been featured in several recent books about the area and fly fishing.  He loved Camden Valley and its wonderful folk, friends old and new.
Herbert Eriksson is survived by his wife, Doris, his children Lynne Fuller, husband Michael and June Schuldt, husband Douglas, 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Friends and relatives are invited to call on Monday, October 30, 2017 from 4-6 pm at McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home,19 East Broadway, Salem.  

A memorial service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at the Shushan United Presbyterian Church, 730 County Route 64, Shushan. Everyone is welcome to join Herb’s family for a luncheon in the church hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations be made to Battenkill Conservancy, BkC, Box 327, Cambridge, NY 12816.
Herb’s life was full, well lived and blessed.  His presence among us will be missed.
